Online with In-Person Enrichment

In this model, course content, including testing, is delivered online. In-person sessions are used for enrichment opportunities on or off-campus (e.g., college or community cultural events, academic lectures, volunteering opportunities, etc.)

Best for

This model may be a good choice if you prefer to:

  • Teach service-learning or community-based classes that typically involve a significant experiential learning component. 
  • Teach a class that requires students to attend campus or community events.

 

Registrar Classification:

This model is available to courses that are classified as “Lecture” by the Registrar in Banner.

PLAN

The planning process is critically important when teaching using this model.  The most important part of the planning is to decide what will be best done outside of class (online) vs. what is best done in the face-to-face (f2f), socially distanced classroom or in the community/on-campus.   Remember, always go back to your course objectives and student learning outcomes (SLOs) when making decisions.

In order to teach an online class you must complete the Distance Education (DE) On-Demand class in OAKS.  You can sign up for this course at any time by logging into OAKS and clicking on Self-Enrollment from the top navigation of your OAKS Homepage.  Once there, click on the name of the course then click Register or EnrollThis will enroll you into the OAKS class and give you the resources you need to get started.

 

In your syllabus, you must clearly communicate that your students MUST come to campus or be in Charleston for the enrichment activities to avoid confusion.

COMMUNICATE

Whether your class is fully face-to-face, fully online, or a mix of both, communication between students and faculty is so important.  In a fully online course you need to communicate often and by multiple methods.  Checking in with your students is critical to ensure they are still engaged in the class and keeping up. You’ll learn many communications strategies in the Distance Education On-Demand class.

CONSIDER THIS
  • For every service learning, experiential learning, or community based activity, consider how this type of learning can still be achieved if CofC quarantines again or needs to move classes off campus, i.e. Hurricanes.
  • Consider how a person outside the Charleston area can fulfill the service learning, experiential learning, or community-based outcomes.
  • If you have exercises or lectures that you use from semester to semester consider recording them or creating them in a format that is reusable. Leave off dates, times, deadlines, CRN numbers to make them generic.

Please don’t forget that you need a Plan B in case you or some of your students are quarantined.  Also don’t forget that the last week of the semester, and the final exam, will be fully online, so plan accordingly.
